Norvasc (Amlodipine Besylate) is a prescription medicament for hypertension from Pfizer. There are several drugs that are treating this disorder. But only Generic Norvasc is sold in 88 countries and has been tested in over 700 scientific studies.
Amlodipine controls high blood pressure for 24 hours and is also used to treat chest pain. It controls blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels and allowing blood to flow more freely inside them. Headache, swelling of the feet or ankles, fatigue and dizziness were the most significant side effects reveled in clinical trials.
There were rare side effects observed during trials: depression, blood disorders, insomnia, gynecomastiam, erratic behavior, impotence, tachycardia, jaundice, hepatitis, hyperglycemia.
Norvasc is in the group of calcium channel blocker and is also used for the treatment of Coronary Artery disease such as Chronic Stable Angina, Vasospastic Angina and Angiographically Documented Coronary Artery disease. The drug’s basic aim is to relax blood vessels by expanding them.
Amlodipine daily dosing varies between 5 mg and 10 mg and can be administered with food or without it.
Pfizer Inc has lost total patent by the end of 2007 therefore a number of generic versions are now available on the US market. Norvasc is also available with Lipitor to treat hypertension and high cholesterol in the prescription medicine Caduet.
